Hunan First Normal College is a wonderful school. I taught there from August 2006 to June 2007, and enjoyed my time as a teacher immensely. Each term my students were well-behaved, eager to learn, and motivated. Both the students and the other teachers were very friendly, and were always willing to help me out when I had questions. The school faculty was also very helpful. If I ever had a problem, I could email or call Tang Jianwu, and my problem would quickly be resolved. However, I passed with year at Hunan First Normal College with very few problems. The school really is a good place, and the vast majority of my time there went smoothly and enjoyably.
Besides good students, coworkers, and a teaching environment, the school also features on-campus living at no additional charge. Our apartments were very modern, and included a living room, bedroom, kitchen, dining room, bathroom, and 2 balconies with nice views. Our apartments were much nicer than apartments I saw at other schools in Changsha. Hunan First Normal College is also located in a great part of Changsha. The surrounding area could be best be described as suburban, with green hills and fresh air combined with numerous shops, restaurants, and another college just across the street. Downtown Changsha is only a bus ride away, and includes many shopping areas, beautiful parks, hiking at Yuelu Mountain, and some Western restaurants for that occasional craving, including McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Subway. There is also an intense nightlife scene.
Changsha is well connected to the rest of China, and the local train station has tickets every day to destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Guilin, and Kunming. The airport often has cheap tickets as well, and weekend trips are easy to take.
Overall, I strongly recommend Hunan First Normal College. Its a great, relaxed place to teach, with wonderful students. The faculty is good, and the housing is excellent. Changsha has just the right mix of old and new China, and you will get a much more authentic experience here than you would in a city such as Shanghai. I have not sent this review yet, I wanted to get your approval before I sent it. Please tell me if you would like me to say anything else.
Sincerely,
Brent

Hunan First Normal College dates back to the Nan Song Dynasty when Southern Changsha City Academy was founded. Eventually, the Academy evolved into Hunan Normal School, which was founded in 1903. This became Public Hunan First Normal School in 1912 after the liberation of China. In March 2000, under the sanction of the PRC Ministry of Education, it was upgraded to the status of a three-year normal college.
The solid reputation as a “thousand-year institution of higher learning and hundred-year normal school” was enhanced by the fact that it became the alma mater of such famous men as Mao Zedong, Cai Heseng, He Shuheng, Ren Bishi, Li Weihan, Xiao San, Zhang Guoji, and Chen Tianhua and others, who are so well-known in Chinese revolutionary history. It is also the place where such famous educators as Zhu Xi, Zhang Shi, Zhang Taiyan, He Shaoji, Xu Teli, Yang Changji, Li Jinxi, Xie Juezai, Zhou Gucheng, Tian Han, Li Da and many others performed their teaching work. Historical figures such as Zeng Guofan, Zuo Zongtang, and Huang Xin buried themselves in the studies at the school, which helped them on their paths to fame.
Mao Zedong, a great figure in history, studied and worked at the school for eight years. At this crucial time in his life and in the life of China, he was actively engaged in a series of revolutionary activities that resulted in the founding of the Chinese Communist Party.
In 1950, Mao Zedong inscribed “First Normal School” for his alma mater and offered the school motto “To be a teacher of the people, one must first be their pupil.” Xu Teli, Mao Zedong’ famous teacher during his studies at this school, came back to inspect the school for six times and inscribed “Be practical and realistic. Do not be self-opinionated.” as the school spirit. In 1933, Jiang Zeming inscribed Mao Zedong’s name on the bronze statue of Mao Zedong in his youth, which stands at the school. Deng Yingchao, Song Renqiong, Song Ping, Li Lanqing, Wei Jianxing, Li Tieyin, are just some of the leading Chinese Communist Party and country leaders who have often visited the school. Many leaders of foreign nations have also been pleased to visit the school.
In recent years, Hunan First Normal College has kept abreast of the times and blazed new trails showing the world a new face in the form of its upgrading of its facilities and the development of an awesome new campus. Now the school has an area of 1348 mu (897768 m2)and over 43 million RMB worth of new teaching equipment. The college library has a collection of over 1 million volumes.
The school has a staff of 778, including 639 faculty members, more than 48 of whom are professors, 12 of whom hold doctorate degrees, and 3 of whom are experts granted with a special governmental allowance. There are 214 teachers holding titles of Associate Professor (or higher), which represents 33.8% of the total faculty. Additionally, there are 252 teachers with a Master’s degree or higher level of education, comprising 53% of the full-time teaching staff. Besides, there are more than 150 part-time teachers.
Presently, there are 10,272 undergraduates and 3-year program students in the school, Thirty-three undergraduate and 3-year programs are opened concurrently. There are five areas of specialty being offered at the school; pedagogy, literature, natural science, engineering, and management science.
Excellent school spirit combined with fine teaching style helps to train qualified graduates who will proudly take their place as future leaders in their various fields and the society. Thanks to the solid foundation of education and practice they receive at the school, graduates from Hunan First Normal College enjoy high consideration in the job market of Hunan Province.
Students at Hunan First Normal College have demonstrated their excellence through participation in numerous math, debate, software creation, English speech and theatrical contests and achieved gold medals and other coveted prizes.
The school has been selected as an example of advanced education for teaching and scientific research. Its beautiful garden-style architecture has caused it to be chosen as an example of civilized building culture at the municipal, provincial, and national levels. The original campus has also been long designated as a major historical, cultural and patriotic site.
